Birdseed Cakes From The Heart
The winter months are upon us!
Here is a wonderful project for the whole family to enjoy making AND giving to our feathered friends.
Here are the simple ingredients to make this beautiful and tasty treats for the birds:
- 1 oz Gelatine
- 3 cups Birdseed
- 1 cup Boiling Water
- Molds – If you have a mold shaped like a heart – this is the perfect time to use it!
- Yarn
Instructions:
Step ONE: Add 1 oz. of gelatine and 1 cup of boiling water and stir until the gelatine has dissolved.
Step TWO: Add birdseed to the gelatine/water mixture. The amount of birdseed that you add varies depending on the type of seed you have chosen for your birds. Your goal is to create a very stiff mixture. Mix the birdseed into the mixture completely.
Step THREE: Spoon the mixture into your molds. Fill the mold to the top and pat down to flatten.
Step FOUR: Cut a piece of yarn long enough to create a hanging loop. Knot one end and stick the knotted end into the seed cake. Cover the knot with a little of the bird seed mixture to make sure it is firmly set in place.
Step FIVE: This may be the hardest step of all – waiting for the molds to harden! You can either leave the molds out at room temperature for 2 hours OR if to set them faster – place them in the refrigerator for 45 minutes.
Step SIX: The birdseed cakes can be released from the mold by dipping the mold quickly into hot water. The cakes should slide right out.
Step SEVEN: Now it’s time to hang these hard, durable, and LOVELY creation in your garden for the birds to enjoy!
